Flinders Street Station and Federation Square are about five minutes’ walk, the National Gallery of Victoria about 10 and the Royal Botanic Gardens about 20. The lobby is dark and dramatic, under a soaring art installation by Melbourne artist Rus Kitchin.
Our Fantastic Suite had a bright living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, playful Melbourne details and a cocktail bar of its own. The marble bathroom has an oval double vanity lit around its edges, a rain shower and a deep soaking tub.
Curious, the cocktail bar, is the hotel’s highlight. You enter from a laneway on Market Street and go down a spiral staircase into a cocoon of dark timber beams, one of the best hotel bars we’ve seen.
On the top floor, WET has an indoor lap pool that curves like the Yarra under a gold roof, with the gym beside it. Breakfast at Lollo is à la carte, built on Australian produce.

The Wonderful room has a king bed, a dark marble bathroom and wardrobes styled after Melbourne’s old newspaper kiosks. The Fabulous room, one category up, is larger; the one we saw had two beds.
For a corner without a suite, request a Premier Deluxe Room, with windows onto Flinders Lane and both a rain shower and a bath. The suite we’d choose is the Supreme Suite, also on a corner, in laneway colours, with a separate lounge over Flinders Lane. For a celebration, Penthouse I is the largest suite, with a wrap-around balcony over the Yarra and dining for eight.
