The building reaches out toward the harbour, finished in the kind of copper once used on ships. The boardwalk is seconds from the door, and the Citadel is about a 15-minute walk.
Our suite felt like the inside of a yacht, with dark bronze, walnut and low ceilings. Full-height windows looked over the harbour and kept the noise out. The bathroom had a deep soaking tub, a rain shower and Aesop products.
The service is what we remember most. Staff at the bell desk and the spa greeted us by name from the first hello. When an airline delayed our bag, the hotel tracked it down and kept calling us with updates.
Windward Wellness, the hotel’s spa and fitness floor, has a pool for a soak rather than laps, a cold plunge, a eucalyptus steam room, an infrared sauna and a salt room. The gym is large and well equipped, with spin and yoga classes.
Drift, the restaurant on the main floor, cooks the food of Atlantic Canada. We ate there and would go back for the seafood linguine.
We left calling it the best place to stay in Halifax, and a match for the best hotels in Canada.
