Our team recommends
The resort sits inside a 2,300-acre nature reserve on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste, a little over an hour’s drive from Liberia’s airport. The road in from the reserve’s gate runs a long way through well-kept grounds, and golf carts carry you around once you arrive.
We stayed in a Fantastic Ocean View Suite, one of the best suites we have stayed in anywhere. It had a large living room, two bathrooms, a walk-in closet and a balcony with its own plunge pool, looking out to the ocean.
From the balcony we watched birds and monkeys we had never seen before, and we began each morning by opening the curtains to the sea. Our building had one of the best outlooks in the resort.
Breakfast at Cocina de Mercado, off the lobby, is a generous buffet of Costa Rican and Western dishes, with pastries that changed every day. The WET Deck pool is for adults, and the Zona Azul Beach Club sits on Playa Conchal, about five minutes’ walk past iguanas and monkeys.
We left counting it among the best hotels we have stayed in, and the right one for a family holiday in Costa Rica.

For the view, request a Fantastic Ocean View Suite, with its plunge pool, in a building facing the ocean.
The hotel now calls that suite the Premier Suite. If you’d rather wake among the trees, the Superior Suite sits in the mangroves, and for a family reunion, choose a Private Residence of three to five bedrooms, with its own pool and open-plan living over the Pacific.
