The hotel is in a quiet residential area about 15 minutes from the centre of Albufeira, so a car is the easiest way to explore. Faro Airport is about 50 kilometres away, and a path leads down to a quieter beach about 10 minutes’ walk below.
We were greeted at the car with a glass of Portuguese wine. Inside, a ceramic wall of 613 pieces by a Portuguese artisan fills the entrance, under a ceiling shaped after the rock of the Benagil Cave.
Our top-floor room was airy and bright, with a balcony over the ocean. Its design borrows from the region, with a headboard shaped like Algarvian village architecture, a minibar modelled on the local chimneys and a plush sardine on the bed.
Breakfast at Market Kitchen paired an à la carte menu, from eggs Benedict to pancakes, with an extensive buffet. Paper Moon serves Italian dinners, and Vino is the place for a glass of wine at sunset.
The AWAY Spa is finished in wood, stone and Portuguese tiles, and the gym is well equipped. Service was the highlight: staff were consistently friendly, enthusiastic and caring, and the hotel never felt busy, even when nearly full.

The rooms are much the same size; what changes is the floor and the view. Ground-floor rooms open onto private gardens, and the top floor has the best sea views. For a splurge, the W Suites add a private rooftop terrace, and the WOW Suite a private plunge pool.
For a family, choose one of the two-bedroom suites, each with two king bedrooms, two bathrooms and a dining area: the Superior Suite opens onto a garden terrace, the Premier Suite onto an ocean-view balcony. Rooms in the same category can connect too. The Penthouse II, on two floors, has a rooftop terrace with gardens, a zero-edge lap pool and room to dine.
