Madrid, Spain
Thompson Madrid stands on Plaza del Carmen in the centre of the city, between Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía.
Our team recommends
The hotel faces the Plaza del Carmen, in the heart of the Centro district. Puerta del Sol is about seven minutes away on foot, Plaza Mayor and the Mercado de San Miguel about ten, and the Royal Palace a pleasant 17-minute stroll.
The lobby sets the tone, in walnut, veined marble, brass and copper, with reception desks built like stacked steamer trunks and work by local artists on the walls. Guests are offered a drink and a snack at the Lobby Bar after check-in, and the art has its own guided tour each day.
Our Corner Suite with Terrace had a living room with a marble dining table, a drinks cabinet styled on the carts of old luxury trains, and a private terrace over the plaza. A bottle of local olive oil was waiting, with a note on where it came from. The bedroom was quiet at night, and the marble bathroom had a deep soaking tub and a walk-in rain shower.
Makáá, up on the roof, cooks Mediterranean food over a grill, open to the air and the sounds of the city below. At breakfast the kitchen works eggs into small, inventive dishes. Late at night, Jack’s Club is a piano bar in the preserved remains of a former church, and no photos are allowed inside.

Our team recommends
Our team found it suits couples and anyone who loves design, with Madrid’s main sights all within a walk.
From our guests
Our guests write about the rooftop bar by the pool.
From our guests
Our guests stay in a king room with a city view.
Our team recommends
For outdoor space, request a suite with a terrace. Ours looked over the plaza, and the terrace suites without a city view have the largest terraces of all.
The Terrace Suites, larger still, open onto an expansive private terrace facing the skyline. For a family, choose the 2 Bedroom Family Suite, or for a celebration, the two-level Penthouse on the top floor, with its own bar, a twin bedroom with its own bathroom and a balcony looking toward Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace. If you’d rather not take a suite, a King Bed with Terrace still gives you a terrace.
From our guests
The rooftop bar by the pool is lovely.
