The hotel is on Nanjing Road East, the pedestrian shopping street, a few blocks from the Bund promenade on the Huangpu River. Cars stop around the corner, a short walk from the door, and the location is excellent for seeing the city.
The lobby begins in daylight, under a skylight and hanging gardens with a pool table, then turns to soft amber light around a bar several storeys high.
Our suite on the 19th floor faced the Bund, with a long table against a lit bookcase, a sofa and windows onto the river, best at night when the Oriental Pearl glows purple. The bedroom is long and calm in light wood, with a faux fur throw and a desk looking over the Bund.
The marble bathroom has double sinks, a full-length mirror and a tub and shower in one wet room, and the bath looks out over the Bund. The bath products are by Le Labo.
Breakfast at Shanghai Tavern pairs a cold buffet with a menu of about two dozen hot Western and Chinese dishes in small portions, so you can try several. The quality was spectacular.
ROOF, the open-air bar at the top, looks across the river to the Oriental Pearl and the towers of Lujiazui, and it is worth coming up for even one drink. Punch Room is a quieter lounge with views of Pudong.
The gym, with an outdoor workout space over Nanjing Road, shares a floor with the spa and an indoor pool along the windows. We came to love the EDITION’s quiet, minimal style, and a room facing the Bund is the reason to stay.
