The hotel stands at the western end of the business district, about five minutes on foot from Southern Cross Station and inside the Free Tram Zone. Marvel Stadium and the Queen Victoria Market are an easy walk, and the airport is 20 to 30 minutes by car.
A quiet drive-in off the main street brings you to the entrance, where staff were quick to take our bags. The hotel fills the top floors of the tower, so you check in at the Sky Lobby on level 80, with the city spread out beyond floor-to-ceiling windows.
We had two Deluxe rooms with king beds, on a corner and sharing a private entry with its own door, which suited a family better than ordinary connecting rooms. Each had a chaise by the window, a desk large enough for everyone and a walk-in closet. The marble bathrooms had a double vanity, a deep soaking tub, a separate shower and Diptyque products.
Breakfast is at Atria on level 80, a continental buffet with a dish from the menu, and a children’s menu too. We came back to Atria for dinner, modern Australian cooking with the skyline outside, and the steak and the fish were both excellent. The Lobby Lounge serves afternoon tea, and Cameo opens in the early evening for cocktails.
The Ritz-Carlton Spa is on level 64, with an infinity pool, a gym open around the clock, and steam rooms, saunas and vitality pools.
The views make the city a backdrop to the whole stay. It is a modern hotel that welcomes families, close to the trains for day trips, and we would return in a heartbeat.
