The resort faces the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque across the canal, and a shuttle takes guests over to visit it. On the grounds is a Venetian-style village of cobblestone lanes around a plaza, about five minutes’ walk from the main building.
The lobby is grand, with towering ceilings, chandeliers and a sweeping staircase, and the corridors to the rooms have glass walls that look straight at the mosque. Our Deluxe King room had a balcony over the gardens and the canal, and shutters that open the bath to the view.
The pool at the heart of the resort is huge, with cabanas, a shallow end and a play area for children, and an adults-only pool sits near the villas. ESPA has its own building on the beach, with 16 treatment rooms and a private beach for spa guests.
Dining runs from Li Jiang, with a terrace facing the mosque, to The Forge for steaks, Mijana for modern Arabic cooking and Giornotte, where breakfast is served.
