London, England, United Kingdom
Montcalm East stands in Shoreditch, a short walk from Old Street station, in a diamond-patterned building inspired by the artist Bridget Riley.
Our team recommends
The hotel is in Shoreditch, north of the Thames, close to Old Street station on the Northern line. Brick Lane is a 20-minute walk, Regent’s Canal is near enough for a morning run, and the Barbican is about 15 minutes away.
The diamond-shaped building stands out on its street, and the design carries on inside. On the way to the front desk you pass through a lit archway, the hallways are dark with bright white lights, and each floor has a tap for still and sparkling water.
We were upgraded to a Junior Suite Dreams, with the queen bed in its own nook, an orange sofa by the largest window and a good desk for working. The bathroom floor was heated. A few hours after we arrived, a manager came by with alcohol-free cocktails, snacks and a welcome note.
Breakfast, now served at Marlowe, is a wide buffet of smoked salmon, charcuterie, pastries and a hot English spread, with eggs made to order. The staff kept checking in and bringing more cappuccinos while we worked.
One level below the ground floor are a pool with a waterfall, a hot tub, a spacious sauna and a round steam room, with the gym and the spa’s treatment rooms alongside.
The staff were excellent, and the front desk sorted out a stubborn room key with good humour. We found it an entirely comfortable base, and a good way to get to know a part of London we hadn’t explored.
From our guests

Our team recommends
Our team found it a good base for exploring Shoreditch and East London, with the rest of the city easy to reach from Old Street.
From our guests
Most of our guests stay in an Anything But Standard room with a queen bed.
Our team recommends
For the views, choose a Sky High room on the top two floors, which look out above the buildings around the hotel.
There are no separate-bedroom suites here; the largest rooms are junior suites, which add a sofa bed. For the most space with that view, request the Sky High Junior Suite, on the top floors and away from the lifts, and for a family, the Family Affair pairs two connecting rooms, each with a queen bed.
