Madrid, Spain
Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star, 2026
JW Marriott Hotel Madrid stands in the old centre of the city, near Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor, and most of its rooms have a private balcony.
Our team recommends
The hotel fills a building that opened in 1899 as the flagship store and factory of Álvarez Gómez, Madrid’s oldest fragrance house. Its past is still in the air, with soft scents in the public rooms, 19th-century iron columns in the lobby bar and the original grand staircase.
It faces Plaza de Canalejas. Puerta del Sol is about five minutes on foot, Plaza Mayor about nine with the Mercado de San Miguel just beyond, and the drive in from Barajas airport takes 25 to 30 minutes.
The bellmen, in sharp blue and grey suits, spotted us across the street and came for our bags. Staff in the lobby were attentive without hovering, and the concierge sent us to good restaurants and the right shops for gifts.
Our Signature Suite had soaring ceilings, warm beige and natural wood, a raised sitting area with a dining table and a bedroom opening onto a terrace. The bathroom was the highlight, with a double marble vanity, a deep soaking tub and a rain shower with excellent pressure.
Wellness runs through the stay: an aromatherapy kit with a diffuser, a yoga mat in the closet with sessions to stream whenever you like, and a pillow spray at turndown. Twice a day, the JW Garden holds short sessions of meditation with Tibetan singing bowls or guided breathing over tea.
Breakfast at Botánicos Álvarez pairs a buffet of fresh juices, charcuterie, smoked fish and Spanish omelette with eggs, pancakes and crêpes made to order. La Botica, the lobby bar, was our favourite room, for beef tartare, ibérico ham and the signature Sando sandwiches. When a drink spilled, the waiter cleared the table and brought a fresh one without being asked.
The gym, open around the clock, has exposed brick walls and plenty of room. We found the warmth and calm of a resort in the middle of the city, and an easy hotel to recommend.

Our team found it right for a couple who want calm after a day in the city, and for families, with connecting rooms behind their own private entrance.

Terraces vary a lot from suite to suite, so if outdoor space matters, request a suite with a larger one. A Deluxe City View room has the same warm design in a smaller space, with a balcony. For a family, request a suite and a room that connect behind their own entrance.
Suites here start with Junior Suites, each with a terrace over the street, and the Signature Suites sit on the top floors with views over the skyline. For the largest terrace, choose the Canalejas Suite, with sunbeds and views across 180 degrees. It also has a dining room and a lounge apart from the bedroom.
